Talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska will follow the “5+5” format and begin with a one-on-one meeting between the presidents, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov said at a briefing on Thursday, August 14.
“It is planned that everything will start tomorrow, August 15, at about 11:30 a.m. local time with a conversation between Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Donald Trump. This meeting will take place in a one-on-one format, naturally with interpreters present,” Ushakov said.
According to him, in addition to the presidents, each side’s delegation will include five members. The Russian delegation, besides Ushakov, will consist of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and the Russian President’s Special Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation with Foreign Countries Kirill Dmitriev. “The composition of the American delegation is also known, but it would probably be proper to wait for the corresponding announcement from our American partners,” Ushakov added.
After their private conversation, Putin and Trump, along with their delegations, will continue talks over a working breakfast. Following the meeting, the two leaders will hold a joint press conference for the media. According to Ushakov, the central topic of the summit will, of course, be the war in Ukraine, “including taking into account the discussion held in the Kremlin on August 6 with the participation of the US President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.” “Naturally, broader tasks for ensuring peace and security, as well as pressing and most acute international and regional issues, will also be addressed,” he said.
The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska will take place at the Elmendorf–Richardson military base on Friday, August 15. Trump has called the meeting a “trial run.” The day before, the American president spoke via video link with European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, participants in the conversation emphasized that safeguarding the fundamental security interests of Europe and Ukraine should play a central role in peace settlement negotiations for Ukraine.
